Biography

Peter Gao is an Assistant Professor in the Department and Mathematics and Statistics at San Jose State University. His research examines applications of spatial statistics and survey statistics to questions in environmental science and the social sciences. He completed his undergraduate studies in mathematics at the University of Chicago before receiving a PhD in statistics from the University of Washington. During his graduate studies, he developed statistical postprocessing methods for improving forecasts for Arctic sea ice thickness and methods for estimating subnational health and demographic rates. He also taught courses on statistics, data science, and ethical concerns related to algorithmic decision-making. In his free time, he enjoys reading, watching movies, and taking photographs.
