Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program
Each year some 800 faculty and professionals from around the world receive Fulbright
Scholar grants for advanced research and university lecturing in the United States.
Individual grants are available to scholars from over 155 countries. Individuals who
meet the eligibility requirements apply for grants through the Fulbright Commission or public affairs section of the U.S. embassy in their home countries. CIES staff can also answer any questions concerning the visiting scholar program.
Steps to hosting a Fulbright Scholar:
- Extend an invitation to a colleague overseas to come to SJSU for research/teaching collaborations
- Let them know to contact the Fulbright Commission regarding next steps for the application process
- Provide a letter of invitation
- The J-1 documents (i.e., DS-2019) will be provided by the Institute of International
Education (IIE); however, please put them in touch with ISSS and go here for more information regarding the post-arrival steps.
Outreach Lecturing Fund
The Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF) provides funding for campuses to host Fulbright Visiting Scholars, already in the United States, for short-term speaking engagements. The principal intent of providing the OLF travel award is to build relationships with
institutions that are currently underrepresented within the Fulbright Program. Visiting
Scholars can benefit U.S. students and faculty of host institutions and their communities
by discussing their Fulbright experience, speaking about their home culture and country,
and providing access and expertise in their fields. For more information about hosting,
please go here.
Fulbright Visiting Scholar Enrichment Programs
The Enrichment Program, implemented by CIES on behalf of the U.S. Department of State
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), offers various enrichment activities
in different locations throughout the academic year for current Fulbright Visiting
Scholars. These activities are designed to enable scholars to better experience America
and further the Fulbright Program’s goal of increasing mutual understanding between
the U.S. and people of other countries.
The contact at SJSU for the Northern California Fulbright Enrichment Program is Parinaz Zartoshty, Director of ISSS. Parinaz can be reached via email at [email protected].
