Below 60 earned units
Current matriculated students who have less than 60 units earned are encouraged to consult with an ESSC Change of Major advisor for the most up to date change of major information. The following steps are a quick overview.
-
STEP 1: Determine Eligibility
-
Majors in the College of Engineering are rigorous, so departments require specific coursework to be completed before their program plan is officially changed.
You can attend a change of major workshop, view the Transition Planning Document for information about mandatory prerequisites, or meet with an ESSC advisor.
Note: If interested in Civil Engineering, please contact Dr. Olivia Yip
[email protected] for the most up to date change of major eligibility requirements. If interested in Computer or Software engineering, please visit the CMPE/SE departments' FAQ page for eligibility information.

STEP 3: Register for classes
-
Waiting for acceptance notices can make planning for the next term difficult or confusing. Until your records are updated to the new major, you might not be able to register for major courses until the first week of courses OR you will need to talk to the department for an add code.
Please be flexible and understand that you might not have the most ideal schedule your first semester in the new major. This is especially true if you're officially accepted into your new major in the Spring, as students are notified within the start of the Spring term.
In the meantime, use the following planning tools to determine which courses you should register for:
- The "what if scenario" of your MyPlanner
- The flowchart of prerequisite courses for the major
- The degree requirements page for the major in the university catalog
