Biography
Emily K. Chan (she/her/hers) is the Director of Research Engagement at San José State
University (SJSU). Previously, she was the Associate Dean, Research & Scholarship
for SJSU Library, where she served in that capacity for five years. In that role,
she provided leadership in the development, delivery, enhancement, and assessment
of library research operations to meet the evolving scholarly, teaching, and learning
needs of the user community. Prior to that, she held various librarian roles that
focused on scholarly communications, sciences, and health sciences at SJSU and the
University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
Her research focuses on scholarly communication, publishing and collections, and assessment.
As a librarian, she has created instructional materials to support learning communities,
and, as an administrator, has advocated for author rights and leveraging the California
State University’s resources and size to achieve economies of scale in the area of
open access.
Emily has worked in higher education and with university students, faculty, and staff
for 15 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Grinnell College
and a master’s degree in library and information science from SJSU.
Vision
Emily endeavors to facilitate the growth of an engaged, knowledgeable, and supported group of researchers and scholars through pertinent and flexible programming and educational/training opportunities. This includes engaging with and providing support to campus faculty and student research, scholarly, and creative activities (RSCA) efforts and developing and deploying a strategy for student RSCA communication and engagement.
